GARDEN ROUTE AND ROUTE 62

(suggested itinerary)

Depart Cape Town along Route 62, the scenic alternate gateway to the Garden Route and Port Elizabeth, enjoying the unexpected pleasures of the Breede River Valley towards the Klein Karoo.  This road meanders through small farming towns of Calitzdorp, the historic Amalienstein and the fruit growing areas and wine producing towns of Barrydale, Montague, Bonnievale, McGregor and Tulbach. to name but a few beautifully preserved villages situated in wealthy farming communities. Optional Wine tasting on the way.
Our destination is Oudsthoorn and the Buffelsdrift Game Lodge, a luxurious tented camp, en-suite with air-conditioning situated on the edge of a natural waterhole. From your deck overlooking the water you can spot the hippo, buffalo, giraffe, and other animals drinking, while watching a beautiful sunset.

The day starts with an early morning bush safari in an open game vehicle with a trained guide to get a closer view of game roaming the open plains, before returning for a hearty safari bush breakfast. There is a swimming pool to laze about or one can take a walk with the elephants to the waterhole, an unforgettable experience. Then on to the Cango caves, a South African Landmark. This is one of the Seven Wonders of Southern Africa and the archeological and historical highlight of the Klein Karoo (Desert). An underground journey through time, through caves formed when acidic water chemically eroded the 100 million year old limestone rock – leaving the splendor of stalactites and stalagmites, formed three million years ago.

Thereafter we visit an Ostrich Farm, as we are in Ostrich Country, where you will learn about these remarkable birds. The tour includes a visit to a breeding farm, explanation of egg hatching, standing on an egg and even a ride on an ostrich for those daring enough.
We depart over the scenic Outeniqua Pass to Knysna, the Oyster Capital of South Africa and the heart of the Garden Route. We explore the Lush Knysna Forest, the Garden of Eden and Featherbed nature reserve, which include a ferry cruise on the tranquil waters of the Lagoon that flushes into the sea through the famous Knysna Heads. This is one of the most striking ecological features of our coastline with great sandstone cliffs that guard the entrance to this breathtakingly beautiful Lagoon.

In the morning we head for Plettenberg Bay, with the backdrop of majestic mountains stretching from horizon to horizon, a collage of green forests and fynbos, separated from the blue of the Indian Ocean by endless white and sandy beaches. The Bay boasts vast schools of playful common dolphin, Bottlenose and endangered shy Humpback dolphins, resident Orca and Byrd’s whales and Southern Right whales. We take a whale-watching cruise that is packed with excitement. In the afternoon we take a drive through the Robberg Marine and Nature reserve, with sweeping views of the ocean, whales and dolphins, ideal for photo-shoots.
In the afternoon we depart for the Tzitsikamma Forests, (a Khoi word meaning “place of abundant or sparkling water “)  with a stopover visit to the Bloukrans River Bridge, one of the longest single span bridges in the world, where you can also attempt the highest Bungi Jump in the world (216m), or watch someone else doing it.
On the way we visit the Elephant Sanctuary and Monkeyland, where the team will personally introduce you to a unique experience of touching, feeding, walking and riding magnificent African elephants

Now into the Tzitsikamma National Park, where we will spend the night.

In the morning a “Canopy Tour”, the first of it’s kind in Africa. The platforms in the forests provide an unbelievable view of this enchanting World, and after 3 hours you exit the forest having undertaken the journey of a lifetime, 30 meters above the forest. Afterwards we head for the Tsitsikamma National Park for a walk in the fern forest along the start of the Otter trail and the mouth of the Storms River, with the famous suspension bridge over the river mouth with spectacular photographic scenery.
